What do single mothers demand?

Our organization cares about those groups of society whose rights are currently practically ignored, whose voices are not heard. Among them, one of the most vulnerable groups is single mothers. Since May, to empower single mothers living in the Adjara region, we have been implementing the project “The Cost of Caring for Single Mothers”, which is financially supported by the Women's Fund in Georgia. The project aims to amplify the voices of this group of women, inform the public about the difficult challenges they face, and motivate society to show solidarity and support for them.

Many women participated in the project and shared their daily challenges, problems and needs with us. One of the most pressing and pressing issues is housing – living in permanent rent and the lack of affordable housing. This is accompanied by frequent changes in the environment, which is stressful not only for mothers, but also for children. Single mothers demand decent working conditions, which include facilitating the combination of work schedules with childcare and ensuring the right to maternity leave from employers. Currently, many women are not granted the status of single mothers by law, which leaves them without the already meager social benefits.

This group of women lacks access to psychosocial and legal assistance, which is often crucial for them. Single mothers are asking for support in starting a small business, as this is one of the main ways for them to achieve financial independence. The support of not only the state, but also donors and banks is vital on this path. It is also completely unfair and discriminatory that a single mother is taxed with an income of 600 GEL. This is against the background that in general, income up to 3,000 GEL per year is not subject to tax. It is necessary to increase this threshold so that already low-income families are not taxed.

Together, we can lend a helping hand to single mothers and change their lives for the better.
